Summary

A small tower mill, once used for pumping drainage water. The mill was rebuilt in 1907, but fell into disuse shortly afterwards. It has now been restored, reusing some early machinery.

Listing Description excerpt:
"Drainage windpump. Early 19th century, rebuilt 1907 by Thomas Smithdale and Sons. Some restoration 1973 also by Thomas Smithdale and Sons. Three-storey brick tower with unusual entatic batter. Doors to north-west and south-east. One blocked window above each. Remains of timber petticoat survive. This windpump re-uses early machinery including cast iron windshaft and timber clasp arm brake-wheel. Early cap frame with winding beams and braces (to winch round cap before introduction of fan stage machinery). 20th-century turbine."

A small tower mill at Belton used for pumping. Rebuilt in 1907, ceased work shortly after the last war and now stands derelict without sails, although the boat-shaped cap was still in place in 1978. Formerly there were four common sails, a tailpole and a scoopwheel.

(S3) states rebuilding was by Smithdale's who also restored it in 1973. 3 storeys with unusual entatic batter. Important for reuse of early machinery including cast iron windshaft and timber clasp arm brakewheel. Early cap frame with winding beams and braces, dating from before the introduction of cap stage machinery. 20th century turbine.
