NHER 12051 (Building record) - The Longhouse

The Longhouse (1-2 Longhouse Yard).

A late 16th-century courtyard house with long beam spanning entrance passage. On upper storey very unusual wall painting revealed on prepared plaster wall, sealed behind later chimney stack which had left 10" [0.25m] clearance to preserve painting. House once belonged to Cley Hall Farm but previous owners knew nothing of its history. Painting apparently now resealed behind chimney as before.

Excerpt of current Listing Description:
"House, now two dwellings, late 15th century, rendered and colourwashed, pantiles. Four bays, one and a half storeys. Passage to rear between bays three and four, internal gable end stacks, central axial stack, gable parapets...Left wall of passage of regular coursed flint and brick mosaic, right wall rendered, massive moulded bridging beam across passage. Left gable of coursed flint. Rear: variety of coursed flint with some brick and flint mosaic, left hand side part rendered, varied fenestration, segmental brick arch to passage. Two-storeyed three-bay wing of coursed flint with brick dressings to rear of first bay, horizontal sliding flush sashes with glazing bars, internal bread oven; two-storeyed late 18th-century extension in red brick with flush sashes and glazing bars to rear of forth bay.
Interior: dwellings to left and right of passageway, entrances from rear. Fragment of wall painting c.1500 against rear east gable wall depicting unicorn and mirror, painting now enclosed by brick wall…"
