Summary

The settlement of Clare is listed in the Domesday Book in this Hundred, held by Robert Earl of Morton. There are no references to it in any later documents, and the exact location remains unknown, as it appears to have become deserted during the early medieval period. It is possible that it was washed away by the sea.

Clare deserted medieval settlement.
Mentioned in Domesday according to Blomfield as being located only in the Hundred and held by Robert Earl of Morton.
No references afterwards.
G. Pooley states that the Earls of Clare took their name from this, and not Clare in Suffolk.
He believes it was washed away by the sea, but evidence?
