Summary

In 1957 various building foundations and two post medieval jettons were ploughed up at this location. Various 18th and 19th century documents mention the possibility that a medieval friary was situated here, but this is far from certain.

Location

Map sheet TG11SE
Civil Parish TAVERHAM, BROADLAND, NORFOLK

Map

May 1957.
Foundations, flints, mortar, bricks and two Nuremburg jettons ploughed up - (NCM card).
Site marked as wood on 6in Ordnance Survey and (S1) mentions 'slight remains of friary in Friary Wood' but unlikely to be this site. Church map of 1740 (held by Norfolk Record Office) marks Prior's Wood at TG 148 142 - (S1) may have misread the name and assumed there were ruins there.
Vicar confirms no Friary Wood in Taverham now.
Query if this is the correct site for the finds, as it is still a wood - but trees are young and could have been planted since 1957. Perhaps land was 'ploughed' to plant them.
E. Rose (NAU) 26 April 1978.

NGR corrected from original (TG 1563 1372).
M. Horlock (NLA) 20 March 2003.
