Full Description
May 1983. Stray find.
Flint axe found on field surface beside dyke, south of Cut Throat Lane. Triangular, bifacially worked and retouched, 11.5 by 7.5cm width (maximum dimension). Greenish patination on one side, blue-grey on other. Many flaw lines in flint. Very well knapped.
This object resembles at first a Palaeolithic handaxe, but is somewhat thin and regular around the blade for this date. It could equally well be an unusual form of, or cut down and reworked, Neolithic chipped axe.
Identified by E. Rose (NAU), with F. Healy (NAU) (in agreement). Outline sketch (S1) in file.
Compiled by E. Rose (NAU), 4 May 1983. Information from (S2).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 30 May 2013.
