Map

1930s. Stray Find.
During the 1930s a number of potentially prehistoric worked flints are known to have been recovered from pits on Skeet's Hill. These included several potentially Palaeolithic flakes that were found by J. H. Capon and exhibited at a meeting of the Prehistoric Society of East Anglia. Information from (S1). It is noted on (S2) that Capon also found "sub-crag implements" at the same location.

According to a note on (S1) the British Museum also holds a number of flint implements from Skeets Hill (1933, 12-5), although a later note suggests that these are eoliths rather than genuine artefacts. These objects could not be identified in the museum's current records.

Although a precise location for these discoveries had not previously been given, it is highly likely that they were recovered from a group of large gravel pits that are known from cartographic sources to have been open on Skeet's Hill during the early 20th century.

Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 27 January 2014.
