Summary

An early record card notes that potentially archaeologically-significant cropmarks are visible at this location on an aerial photograph taken in 1946 and a more recent review of the available aerial photographs mapped a number of linear vegetation marks and slight earthworks in this field (part of a much larger group recorded as NHER 52134). It was though noted that these were of possible recent agricultural origin and geophysical surveys of parts of this field in 2010 and 2014 identified no anomalies of interest. A single trial trench excavated at this location in 2014 also revealed no potentially archaeologically-significant remains.

Map

Set of cropmarks on aerial photographs taken 16 April 1946 RAF/Ordnance Survey.
Information from records (S1) and (S2).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 23 January 2023.

March 2009. Norfolk NMP.
Various earthworks of probable medieval to post-medieval date are visible in the vicinity of Mangreen Hall (NHER 9767) on aerial photographs taken in 1947 and 1956. These remains (recorded as NHER 52134) include a group of a vegetation marks and slight earthworks at this location, which may represent a series of ditches and banks. It is though noted that a relatively recent, agricultural cause for these features cannot be ruled out.
These potentially archaeologically-significant earthworks presumably relate to the previously noted cropmarks (see above).
P. Watkins (HES), 23 January 2023.

2010. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed quarry extension area.
This survey saw the examination of a portion of this field, to the south of the earthworks recorded in 2009.
It appears that no archaeologically-significant anomalies were recovered at this location.
Report awaited (details from report on 2014 survey).
P. Watkins (HES), 23 January 2023.

December 2014. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site of proposed quarry extension (Field 2).
This survey of a large portion of this field revealed no potentially archaeologically-significant responses.
Although two linear anomalies were recorded these are thought to represent a clay land drain and an iron pipe. There was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with the possible earthworks visible at this location on aerial photographs (part of the group recorded as NHER 52134).
Information from report uploaded to OASIS. HER copy awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 23 January 2023.

August-October 2011. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed aggregate extraction area (Field 1; Trench 18).
The single trench excavated at this location (in the southern half of the field) revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits.
See report (S3) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S4).
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2011.554).
