Summary

Soilmarks of a possible Bronze Age barrow were seen on an aerial photograph. They were first interpreted as an agricultural feature but a visit to the site identified a slightly oval central mound and possible surrounding ditch supporting the barrow interpretation. Prehistoric burnt flints were found here.

Map

April 1982. On fen between former Sams' Cut Drain and Poppylot Road.
Cropmark of circle with central feature. Possibly surrounding upstanding mound visible on Fenland Survey air
photograph.
F. Healy (NAU), November 1982.

This is a very unusual setting for a ring ditch. Is it in fact an agricultural mark made eg by a crop sprayer? Photograph not seen.
E. Rose (NAU) and D. Edwards (NAU), November 1982.

This is no more than a rather regular sandhill on the Fen Edge. Photograph as given not located at Fenland Survey but same feature seen on (S1).
R. Silvester (NAU), 12 September 1983.

29 April 1987. Visited by R. Silvester (NAU).
Who wishes to withdraw statement above and say that Dr Healy could be correct. Low mound about 0.4m higher than surrounding skirtland. Appears to be oval on Fenland air photograph (which in fact shows it as soil not cropmark) but when paced was 39m east to west x 36m north to south excluding 'ditch' and was composed of chalky loam as is rest of skirtland here. Surrounding it is a depression which could be a ditch perhaps, 0.2m below skirtland level.
For full details of wares, flint types etc see (S2).
