Summary

Knotty Kot is a timber framed house, probably originally a small barn of 1600, converted to a house around 1700. The east end was added as a further barn at this time or later, and there is evidence of some reused timbers. Excavation of a test pit below the present floor of the cottage recovered some 15th to 16th century Transitional Ware pottery sherds.

February 2002. Excavation.
In response to a request by E. Rose (NLA), who had observed animal bone in the side of a test pit excavated below the present floor of the western room of Knotty Kott, this test pit was enlarged and the bone was excavated under archaeological conditions. The bone consisted of a non-articulated cattle mandible, which lay within a deposit of probable occupation material which contained further animal bone and three sherds of 15th-16th century Late medieval Transitional Ware pottery.
See report (S3) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S4).
