Summary

Linear and rectilinear cropmarks visible on aerial photographs taken in 1983 and 1999 were initially interpreted as the possible remains of a building and an enclosure. Subsequent work using earlier aerial photographs suggests that they in fact represent a combination of modern drains and recent agricultural activity.

Full Description

29 July 1983. NAU aerial photography (S1).
Cropmarks aligned roughly north to south towards river; traces of enclosure to south. Resembles foundation of a large building, but nothing here on 1945 Ordnance Survey (revised 1938).

The cropmarks described above, visible on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), are unlikely to be of archaeological significance. The two long sides of the postulated building, which are aligned north-to-south, correspond to modern drains visible on vertical aerial photographs (S4)-(S5), at TG 4194 1833. The cropmarks of the possible enclosure to the south are more likely to be the product of recent agricultural activity and further drainage, rather than the presence of archaeological features. Consequently, the cropmarks have not been mapped by the NMP.
