Map

15 August 1979. On east edge of airfield.
Revealed in pipe trench.
Pits - note proximity of barrow?
Pipe trench cut from near Chalk Lane into airfield.
Accidentally discovered soon after excavation by E. Rose (NAU). Several pits apparent in sides of trench which was 2m deep x 1m wide. Most obvious pit tapered to point just at trench bottom, and was about 1m across east to west. Fill was of apparently same soil as topsoil (or irregular depth over chalk). Impossible to excavate without collapsing side of trench. No finds in spoil heap but method of dumping might have concealed much. This pit was just east of perimeter fence; other pits noted, less well defined, and still more could be seen in distance from fence. Note that NHER 4497 may not be accurately plotted (very hard to locate on ground owing to felling of wood) and this pit might well be connected with that site.
