Full Description
Around 1828.
'In a field called Coles Field formerly and now known by the name of the 8 Acres (1843) in the occupation of Mr. Colby was discovered by...about 1828, 8 bronze celts, some spear and arrowheads and a sword, all of the same sort of metal, but little care was taken of them.
I was only able to discover one of the celts which the finder of them had kept as a Memento of his discovery.
This field is situate on the north side of a valley at the Bottom of which is a considerable stream, and in a field on the opposite side (was a barrow, see under NHER 10766)'.
See (S1), Norwich Library, no illustration.
R. R. Clarke (NCM) suggests NHER 10767 palstave is from this hoard.
Transcribed by R. R. Clarke (NCM).
Clarke's suggested location was around 204 867, but he noted he had not checked this; it is anyway in Pulham Market (St. Mary Magdalen) not St. Mary (the Virgin) and not on the north side of the valley.
1982.
Exhaustive checking of tithe map 1838 (S2) located Coles Field, tenanted by Mr. Colby, as field at grid reference in box above (201 853).
E. Rose (NAU), 11 October 1982.
