Summary

A single trial trench was excavated here in 1973, across the suggested line of a Roman road (NHER 7598). An Iron Age pit and a single Roman pit were the only features recorded - no trace of the road was identified. Finds recovered during this work included Mesolithic/Neolithic flint flakes; Iron Age, Roman and medieval pottery sherds (including a Roman greyware ?waster sherd); a possible Roman coins; a Roman brooch and an undatable perforated whetstone. This excavation was previously recorded under NHER 7598.

Map

1973. Excavation.
Excavation of single trial trench (Cutting I) across bridle path, on suggested line of Roman road (NHER 7598) running between the Roman settlement at Brampton (NHER 1124) and the Thorpe St Andrew riverside. This work revealed two pits, one containing a single sherd of Iron Age pottery and some potboilers, and the other containing Iron Age and Early Roman pottery. A peat deposit produced Roman pottery sherds, including a greyware waster and Samian. The overlying soil deposit produced additional sherds of Roman pottery and several unglazed medieval sherds (S1). Other unstratified finds recovered during this work included Mesolithic/Early Neolithic flint waste flakes, a Roman Colchester brooch (S2), an illegible copper alloy coin (probably Roman) and an undatable perforated whetstone (S3). All finds were retained by the finder.

There was no evidence that the bridle path was the Roman road, but it was noted that the nearby farm is called Street Farm, perhaps suggesting the bridle path was once a street.
