Full Description
Pre 1963. Stray Find.
1 prehistoric pebble macehead with hour-glass perforation. Donated to the Norwich Castle Museum by S. S. George in 1963 (NWHCM : 1963.120.40 : A). Information from (S1). These objects are not closely datable, simple quartzitic examples such as this having been found in both Mesolithic and later prehistoric contexts.
This macehead is listed in (S2), where it is recorded as coming from "M. Farm". This is almost certainly a contraction of Meadow Farm as it appears that S. S. George had contact with the Newton family, who worked this farm (reporting a find make by N. Newton to R. R. Clarke in 1935 - see NHER 8731). A number of objects that were probably pebble maceheads were found at Meadow Farm by C. F. Newton in the early 20th century (NHER 8730), see (S3). The possibly therefore exists that the object in the NCM is one these early discoveries.
