Summary

At some time prior to 1946 a Palaeolithic flint flake was found at an unknown location in the parish of West Winch. It has also been suggested that the King's Lynn Museum holds an unprovenanced handaxe from West Winch, although it is possible that this is actually an implement from East Winch (see NHER 3397).

FINDS IN THE NORWICH CASTLE MUSEUM

The Norwich Castle Museum hold a single abraded Palaeolithic flint flake from West Winch. This object is part of a larger collection of prehistoric worked flints (NWHCM : 1946.164.36) and its exact provenance is not known. Although described by (S1) as a "flake tool" it was listed by Roe (S2) as an unretouched flake.
This find is also noted on (S3) and in (S4), (S5) and (S6), although no additional information is given.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 29 August 2013.

OTHER FINDS

On (S3) and in (S4) Wymer described an unprovenanced handaxe from West Winch in the King's Lynn Museum. From (S3) it is clear that this object is an unprovenanced handaxe recorded by the KLM as being marked "SW" "EW" (KILLM : 2001.575). Until (S3) was examined it appeared that this object was the most likely candidate for a handaxe from East Winch described in (S7) and recorded as being in the KLM (NHER 3397). Both the description and dimensions given in the museum's records are consistent with those of the published implement. It is also notable that Roe (S2) lists no unprovenanced handaxes from West Winch in the KLM.
