Summary

A large and well-preserved example of an early 19th century lime kiln. The kiln is marked on an Ordnance Survey map of 1836.

Marked on (S1), but not on (S2).

Very big and very well preserved. Bell and air vents open.

Good condition, wind blows in door and out of tuilieres.

Site visited and considered as part of archaeological assessment of Holkham Estate.
Overgrown but in good condition. Almost inaccessible. Suggestion that site could be managed as a bat refuge.

This site is interesting in that the kiln vents are extended above ground, like chimneys. No other lime kiln has these so it is difficult to tell whether they have been destroyed or never had them in the first place.
Site is last noted on 25ins O.S. maps 1885. (S5)
