Summary

A Late Saxon iron spearhead with traces of wood in the socket was found in 1976 during excavations for a new road at Wayford Bridge. Human bones and fragments of 17th century pottery were recovered from the excavation's spoil heaps.

February 1976.
Spearhead, iron, 26cm long, 2.5 cm at widest part of blade, (S1).
Double bevel on blade and slight moulding at base. Traces of wood in socket. Found in peat at depth of about 6m (20 feet). At same depth and nearby but not associated was a section of tree trunk; ash (P. Lambley, NCM).
Found during excavations for new Wayford Bridge road.
Information given to E. Rose (NAU), 18 February 1976.

Identified by Vera Evison (NAU) as Late Saxon of Anglo-Danish type.
