Summary

In 1975 several possible pits and a ditch containing burnt material were observed in a cable trench at the western end of this site. A small number of finds were collected from the spoil including a prehistoric flint flake, a handmade pottery sherd of possible Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age date and Roman pottery. The nature of the observed remains is uncertain, particularly as a geophysical survey of the entire site in 2014 revealed no potentially archaeologically-significant anomalies. A watching brief maintained during groundworks in the vicinity of the school buildings in 2015 also had entirely negative results.

March 2014. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of Redgate Middle School playing fields.
The survey identified no potentially archaeologically-significant responses.
Although numerous discrete anomalies were recorded these are thought to be primarily geological in origin. Isolated dipolar anomalies and larger areas of magnetic disturbance around the margins of the site were probably caused by ferrous material in the topsoil (most likely modern debris).
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 4 March 2022.

April-August 2015. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks in vicinity of Redgate Middle School. The excavation of foundations for a classroom extension and associated retaining wall revealed no archaeologically-significant remains. The stripping of a small nearby area for a carpark extension also exposed nothing of interest. All of these groundworks exposed natural chalk deposits, which lay directly beneath the topsoil. It is therefore possibly that this area was truncated when the school was constructed.
No finds were recovered.
See report (S3) for further details.
The archive associated with this work has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.308).
