Map

According to (S1) 'Remains of the ancient hall of the Walpoles' were found in 1870 in this area. A drawing shows a rectangular foundation said to be 17th century. However the present hall is said to stand on the site of its predecessor.

This account is confirmed in (S2), which gives site as in gardens at south end of old avenue.
Foundations of side and back walls of house were found, 4 1/2ft thick, north-to-south wall 142ft long.
Also window mullions, brass and iron articles, and a sundial.
Called early 13th century.
No trace of this spot today.
Estate manage believes site was slightly nearer the present Hall but nothing here either. He says fragments of brick etc have been found all over the area.
E. Rose (NAU) 31 January 1980.

Informant [1] states that map evidence shows clearly that the Jacobean hall stood on the site of the present north wing; but an earlier hall could well have been on this site.
E. Rose (NAU) 1 March 1984.
