NHER 18647 (Find Spot record) - Multi-period pottery sherds and coins

19 January 1983.
Context 1.
Medieval debris over field - archive adds five Late Saxon sherds.
Probably run-off from at least four scatters (below).
All dense scatters on or adjacent to roddons.
Where no roddons as in northwest corner field, very little pottery. Noticeable that quite a few sherds on tail of ploughed down Sea Bank. Possibly covers roddon here ([1]) or broken pottery included in make-up of bank.

Context 2 at [2].
Fairly dense scatter medieval pottery. Including eighty sherds Late Saxon.
Bone.
Fired clay.
No stone but some quern fragments noted in archive.
Possible slag and one fragmentary bronze object.

Context 3 at [3]. Largely hidden by pruned gooseberries, south side roddon. 20m west-east x 15m north-south minimum (area to aouthwest under strawberries not checked). 2.7m (9ft) OD.
Small scatter medieval pot, occasional fragments fired clay, bone.
Also two Late Saxon sherds.

Context 4 at [4]. On small roddon adjacent to edge of field so full extent unknown. 110m northeast-southwest x minimum 20m northwest-southeast, 2.7m (9ft) OD.
Scatter medieval pot, some bone, fired clay, shell.
Also some Late Saxon sherds.

Context at [5]. 3 March 1983. In between rows, ground churned up so finds from beneath plants where ground weathered. Minimum area 40m north-south x 25m east-west but probably disappears into next garden. 3.7m (12ft) OD.
Scatter med pot on top large roddon covered by gooseberries or some other such hideously prickly bushes.

Context 6 at [6]. Spread along top and sides of low roddon. West side roddon under gooseberries, rest ploughed. Area approximately 140 x 40m. 2.7m (9ft) OD. Not clear if linked with Context 2.
Much medieval pottery and much Late Saxon.
Bone.
Shell.
Some fired clay.

Archive states a double lead bale seal, 16th/17th century found at Context 5.

Pre 1987. Recorded at very approx grid reference [7] by finder - map not seen. Found with metal detector.
'One Byzantine silver plus Roman and med pottery in field'.
Objects not seen - what is meant by Byzantine is not known but possibly a medieval Venetian soldino.
