Full Description
November 1977. Site visit.
19th century industrial building; yellow brick with red-brick trimmings. Mansard roof with lantern; upper part slate but lower sections of glass all the way round. Part of disused printing works but the other buildings of this are more recent; what was its original purpose?
E. Rose (NAU), 2 November 1977.
Demolished 1980.
It is possible that this building may have formed part of a printing works belonging to John Thew who occupied Nos. 1-2 High Street and started publishing the Lynn News in 1841. The business was taken over by his son John Dyker Thew in 1856 and expanded into Nos. 3 and 4 High Street around 1873/4. The Lynn News moved into purpose-built newpaper publishing offices and printing works on Purfleet Street in 1923, but it is entirely possible that this building, located as it is to the rear of both 1-2 High Street and 11 Purfleet Street, may have been an earlier part of the printworks when the Lynn News was based on High Street, and was incorporated into the new buildings erected in 1923.
See (S1) for further information about 1-2 High Street.
