NHER 16719 (Building record) - Manor Farmhouse, Church Road

1980. Site visit.
Central part of house now faced in 19th century brick, two storeys. East gable is of flint, and patches of this appear in the other walls. Against each gable is a massive chimney, showing that the roof was formerly thatched. Against the west gable where the chimney is the larger of the two, a taller extension with two blocked windows of 17th century type to west. Small extension on east of central block. On north of central section is a porch tower. Basic structure of house must be pre 17th century.

1983 Listing Grade II dates as all 17th century but says 'of four builds but unclear sequence'. Says porch tower is really a stair turret with dovecot in top, but does not describe any of the interior of the building. One stack has octagonal shaft bases later converted to square shafts.

The 17th century gateway to the south is listed Grade II separately. At the time of listing only some moulded brickwork and a finial were visible through the ivy. The gate has now been restored; the piers are 2m high, with embossed Mannerist designs in brickwork, and a stone ball on top of each. Seen in passing.
