Full Description
Summer 1972. Field Observation.
Four test holes, placed along the line of the suspected town moat, were excavated by May Gurney Ltd. in advance of Star GB Development at Market Gates.
Three of the test holes were observed by J. Sewter and a fourth was reported by G. Rye.
Deposits filling town ditch revealed. Face and footings of wall exposed in one test pit. Post medieval pottery, as well a deposit of early 18th century clay pipes.

1973. Three trenches dug by JCB in area of Star Development, south of Market Gates Road.
Trenches at right angles to foot of town wall (NHER 4294). Revealed section of town ditch filled with soil and silt deposits. Exposed flint and stone foundations of the wall's Guard Tower. Much post medieval pottery (16th century onwards) both in and out of the ditch.
