Full Description
9 June 1980 and 9 December 1980. NAU aerial photography.
Positive cropmarks.
Two sides of an enclosure.
S. Norton (NAU), 9 September 1982.
Formerly concealed by wood, on First Edition Ordnance Survey map (S1) but now removed, the mark of which can also be seen.
E. Rose (NAU), 13 September 1982.
December 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The enclosure described above, three sides of which can be made out, is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S2)-(S3), centred at TG 2782 1379. Other undated ditches also visible on the same aerial photographs may or may not be associated with it. No finds have been recovered from the vicinity of the enclosure, other than a Neolithic flint axehead (NHER 16104) from a location 100m to the south, nor does it display any strong association with other archaeological sites in the surrounding area, including the cropmarks identified to its west (e.g. NHER 50744) and east (e.g. NHER 50725). Consequently it is difficult to date, although as described above, its southern corner is overlain by the plantation of Ortolan’s Grove as depicted on historic maps, e.g. the Ordnance Survey 2nd edition 25 inch (S4), suggesting that it pre-dates this probably post medieval landscape feature.
The enclosure is rectilinear in plan. A possible entrance in its western side is too narrow to be entirely convincing.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 7 December 2007.
September 2025. Record reviewed as part of the Forestry Commission Project K
The enclosure described above is also visible as cropmarks on Bing Maps (S5).
J. Powell (Norfolk County Council Environment Service), 04 September 2025.
