NHER 4316 (Monument record) - Medieval town ditch and multi-period finds

Summary

Excavations in 1955 examined a section of the town wall and its outer ditch. Fragments of medieval pottery were found, and underneath these, a fragment of Roman pottery and a Roman roof tile were discovered.

Full Description

April to July 1955. Deneside and 4 Alexandra Road. During work to extend the British Home Stores. Section of town wall (NHER4294) and moat dug by C. Green. Revealed medieval pottery and below it roughly on OD, estuarine mud with Roman imbrex and a fragment of Roman pottery. (4th century Roman pottery at 3m (10 feet) plus OD).

The current Ordnance Survey map (S4) suggests that the ground surface at site was roughly at 5m above Ordnance Datum. Therefore, the Roman pottery was probably found at 2m or more below the ground surface.
