NHER 16708 (Monument record) - Site of post medieval lime works

Lime works.
Two kilns, one to west recorded 1891, disused 1904, now buried under rubbish in wooded pit.
Superceded kiln to east, now almost totally invisible under mound with tree on top.
Irregular D-shape, roughly semi-circular tunnel round pot against bank. Walls of clunch blocks rendered, roof vault of rendered brick, pot fabric flint and clunch.
One remaining chute arch is a reused limestone arch of medieval date presumably from Westacre Priory.
Other blocks similar stone amongst rubble and footings survive of other arches.
One square tuiliere in roof of passage.
Excavated by E. M. James and D. Jones for KLM in 1981.

Same as 'curious small medieval building built into the side of the hill... in same pightle as a chalk pit...excavated by [1] in 19th century.. Gothic arched roof of red brick and tiny aumbries of stone within...now used as chicken house'. See (S1).
