Summary

Fieldwalking in 1984 recovered a general scatter of medieval pottery sherds from this field. A concentration of medieval pottery sherds, shell and bone fragments, and some Roman sherds, was also noted on the edge of a possible trackway. Metal detecting in 1992 recovered a French medieval jetton, dating to the late 15th century.

2 April 1985. Fieldwalking on well weathered ploughsoil.
Context 1: general scatter odd medieval sherds. WPP FO (S1).
Context 2: at 5142 1517. Concentration medieval pottery (moderate) shell (sparse to moderate) a few fragments of bone. Not much modern debris. On edge of drove dropping down side. 26m north to south (may extend further south) x 28m east to west. 2.1m OD. WPP 98 (S2)
Finds in NCM.
Some of the material from contexts 1 & 2 has been reidentified as Roman pottery.

1992. Metal detector finds.
French medieval jetton, late 15th century. Shield of France type. Obverse reads AVE MARIA GRACIA, reverse depicts triple stranded cross. See 709 (S4).
