Summary

Fieldwalking during the 1970s recovered several Neolithic polished flint axehead fragments and a range of other prehistoric worked flints, including axes/picks, blade and flake cores, blades and flakes, scrapers and fabricators. It is possibly that some of the core tools were Mesolithic. A single sherd of Middle Saxon pottery was also found.

Map

Pre 1974. Stay Find.
Found by [1]:
Thick scatter of flints including polished axe fragments. Not seen.
Information from (S1).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 11 August 2014.

1976 to 1980. Fieldwalking (finder's Site 202a).
Many worked flints recovered by [2]. Finds from this site were first reported in 1978. In 1980 the flints found between 1976 and 1980 were listed as comprising:
1 Neolithic fragmentary polished flint axehead. See drawing (S2).
9 prehistoric picks/axes, 11 irregular cores, 23 blade cores, 35 scrapers, 4 concave scrapers and 2 fabricators.
A selection of these flints (including cores, flakes, blades and scrapers) were donated to the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1978.354).
Identified by A. Lawson (NAU) 10 September 1980 and compiled by J. J. Wymer (NAU), 29 November 1983.
Information from (S3).
The date of these flints is not explicitly stated on (S3), although the only period listed is Neolithic (originally added for the 1974 finds). It should however be noted that the picks/axes are listed in R. Jacobi's records (S4) as potentially Mesolithic. No additional details are given, suggesting he had simply received information regarding these finds.

Also found at this site (in 1979).
1 Middle Saxon sherd also found (grey, sandy, probably Ipswich ware).
Identified by T. Gregory (NAU), 10 December 1979.
Information from (S4).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 11 August 2014.
