Summary

This is the site of a workhouse built in the late 18th century, which was destroyed by fire in the early 19th century. The tithe map of 1838 shows the site as 'Workhouse Field'.

A House of Industry was erected in Acle parish in 1788.
During the hard winter of 1814 it had so many inmates that they were accommodated in tents on the lawn.
It was destroyed by fire in 1834.
The site does not seem to be known: it is not shown on (S1), see (S2).
This general site was indicated by a member of the parish council.
(S3) shows it as Workhouse Field.
