Summary

This is the site of a medieval moated manor which was visible as earthworks on aerial photography and later as cropmarks and soilmarks during arable use of the land. Some late medieval and post medieval pottery sherds were recovered from this site, which is thought to include a pond and formal gardens. This enclosure lies on the east side of a medieval drove road and contains raised terraces and two ornamental ponds. It has been identified as Broughton's Manor, present in 1685, and during the later 15th century was held by the Broughton family from the Abbot of St Edmundsbury.

Cambridge University Committee for Aerial Photography No BWM 62 (S1). Earthworks in snowy winter deserted medieval settlement.
Compiled by S. Norton (NAU), 11 May 1983.

Context 1.
Extended to south from earlier Unit aerial photographs where cropmarks of dykes and roads? Join up with what may be an apparent moat. Still shown on current 6 inch Ordnance Survey (S1) but in fact ploughed out and visible as lodged crop.
Compiled by E. Rose (NAU), 2 June 1983.

21 March 1984.
Apparent moat (now allocated context 1) visited. Filled in a few years ago by owners but still shows as darker undulation in ground surface where large quantities post medieval debris bulldozed into ditch. Two labourers cottages had been constructed within moat, now gone. Pottery from island and infilled ditches predominantly late as might be expected, perhaps a little late medieval but majority post medieval.
Compiled by R. Silvester (NAU), 21 March 1984.

1989-1990. Further fieldwork during Fenland Evaluation Project.
Resistivity survey over part of house platform on island.
Traces of ?masonry features revealed.
See dossier in file.
Compiled by M. Leah (NLA), August 1990

The 1989-90 Fenland fieldwork was not on the moat context 1 but on the earthworks immediately south of Aylmer Hall, in northeast of site, which were identified as a manorial site. These have now been scheduled 1995 as a moated site, ponds and formal gardens.
See detailed schedule description in file.
Compiled by E. Rose (NLA), 19 January 1995.

Site in excellent condition, with minimal erosion of earthworks.
Grazed by cattle April to October.
Compiled by H. Paterson (NLA), 1 December 1995.
