Summary

Part of an Early Saxon small long brooch was found after topsoil had been removed before construction of a bypass. The brooch may have come from anywhere in the field and been moved to its findspot by machinery.

3 or 4 October 1980. On line of Harleston bypass, 15m from Wells Road, along footpath.
Field 304.
Found under 4cm of loose sandy gravel after 36cm topsoil removed by machine from meadow.
Possibly redeposited by machines from elsewhere in field.
Cruciform small-long Early Saxon brooch, upper portion only.
Bronze, 6th century.

During four hours fieldwalking, no other finds in an area 35m square.
