Full Description
Around 1969. Excavation.
3 "Middle Palaeolithic tools" recovered during the excavation of a trench at an unknown location in Weeting. Although the site of this work is not known it is believed to not be either Grimes Graves (NHER 5640) or the Botany Bay clay pit (NHER 5643).
These finds were identified by E. Rose at the British Museum (Prehistoric and Romano-British antiquities P1970 1-3). The story of their finding as given by a museum assistant at the British Museum [2], to E. Rose (NAU) in 1970 was as follows:
"During the season of excavations at High Lodge, Suffolk, (before September 1969) one morning [3] put a local labourer in a van with myself and drove us a long way down forest tracks until we reached the top of a low hill. He told us to dig a trench, went off and came back that night to collect us. We had only found three flints so he said it was a waste of time and he got someone else to backfill. It was not at Grimes Graves, I don't know where it was but it was a long drive from High Lodge and in lots of trees".
The flints were registered with the High Lodge excavation finds but entered simply as 'Weeting'.
It is possible that if High Lodge is published some light might be shed on this.
