Summary

Sewer trench digging here in 1978 unearthed a number of human bones. As the bones were found over a wide area they may have come from a cemetery. Various pieces of medieval and post medieval pottery have also been retrieved from the same site.

Map

13 April 1978.
Human bones found in digging sewer trenches at south end Malthouse Row. Bones found afterwards in skip.
Information from Downham Market police.
Site visited by R. Rickett (NAU) 14 April 1978.

Bones found over a wide area in two trenches, north-to-south and east-to-west joining, immediately south of south wall of cottages. 0.92m (3ft) deep. Suggests probably a graveyard.
The bones are of several individuals and include skulls with fused sutures. 1840 Tithe map marks this spot just as it is today - 'Malthouse and paddock'.

According to County Hall the same is true of the 1818 Enclosure Map.
No older maps known (detail too small to be seen on Faden) - E. Rose (NAU). Pottery from this site was given to KLM in April 1978 and identified as two sherds of neck of jug (rim about 7cm) medieval grey unglazed ware, and one sherd of rim of bowl of grey/black unglazed ware.
Also several post medieval sherds.
