Summary

Various finds recovered over the course of several years from the garden of Roudham Hall, including prehistoric flints and multi-period pottery sherds. The flint assemblage appears to comprise pieces of mixed date and includes one piece of Mesolithic date as well as a number of long, narrow blades and flakes that are of probable Mesolithic or Early Neolithic date. The other pieces, which include scrapers and a number of retouched flakes, are more likely to be later prehistoric. The pottery recovered includes sherds of Roman greyware, Ipswich ware, Thetford ware and St Neots ware. Medieval pottery was also found. Other finds of note from this site include a glass bead of possible Late Saxon date.

Map

Various artefacts recovered from the garden of Roudham Hall. These finds were previously recorded under NHER 1057.

1992 or before. Stray Find.
Prehistoric flints and a range of pottery sherds were recovered from the vegetable garden.
The flint objects consist of two scrapers, three blades, and twelve flakes.
The pottery assemblage includes three Roman sherds, Middle Saxon Ipswich pimply ware, Thetford and St Neots ware, ten medieval fragments, Late medieval transitional ware, and post-medieval fabrics.
See list in file.
H. Hamilton (HES), 11 April 2013.

1992. Stray find.
Nine worked flints were recovered, consisting of seven flakes, a blade and a platform pyrmidical blade core. It has been suggested that the assemblage appears to be Early Neolithic, but this identification remains tentative due to the absence of diagnostic tool types.
Several sherds of Late Thetford-type pottery, medieval pottery, and post-medieval pottery were also recovered.
See list in file.
H. Hamilton (HES), 11 April 2013.

1993-1994. Stray Find.
Fifty-four worked flints, including flakes, a scraper, piercers, notched pieces, retouched pieces and several blade. One blade is possibly Mesolithic or Early Neolithic, although the remainder of this assemblage is of probable later prehistoric date (perhaps Late Bronze Age or Early Iron Age). Sherds of Roman, Middle Saxon, Late Saxon and medieval pottery also recovered.
P. Watkins (HES), 17 April 2013.

1994-1995. Stray Find.
Six prehistoric worked flints including five flakes/blades and a possible piercer (possibly Early Neolithic). A blue glass bead of possible Late Saxon date, one sherd of pimply Ipswich ware, four sherds of Thetford ware, and a fragment of Thetford or medieval unglazed ware were also recovered.
See list in file.
H. Hamilton (HES), 12 April 2013.

1995-1996. Stray Find.
Seven prehistoric flint flakes were recovered along with additional sherds of Ipswich ware and Thetford ware.
See list in file.
H. Hamilton (HES), 12 April 2013.

Earlier 1997. Stray find.
A Prehistoric side scraper and ten unmodified flint flakes were recovered along with additonal pottery sherds.
The pottery assemblage includes a sherd of possible Roman grey ware, Thetford ware, medieval unglazed, and late medieval transitional ware.
See list in file.
H. Hamilton (HES), 12 April 2013.

1997. Stray find.
A Mesolithic burin and four Prehistoric flakes (one retouched) were recoverd along with additional sherds of sandy Ipswich ware, Thetford ware, early medieval, and unglazed medieval pottery.
See file for full list and sketch of Mesolithic burin .
H. Hamilton (HES), 12 April 2013.

1998 to 1999. Field observation. Surface finds.
Prehistoric worked flints, including an end scraper, a flake knife, several retouched flakes, and 23 unmodified flakes and blades. No diagnostic pieces were identified within this flint assemblage. The presence of a high percentage of long narrow flakes suggests a possible Early Neolithic date, but may of the retouched pieces suggest a Later Prehistoric date.
Middle Saxon, Late Saxon, medieval and post-medieval sherds.
See list in file.
A. Rogerson (NLA), 14 July 1999.

1999 to 2000. Field observation. Further surface finds.
Nine Prehistoric worked flints were recovered, including two borers, a core rejuvinating flake, and a retouched flake. Although these objects could not be closely dated, the presence of a high percentage of long narrow flakes indicates a possible Mesolithic or Early Neolithic date.
Additional pottery sherds were also recovered, including Middle Saxon, Late Saxon, medieval and post medieval wares.
See lists in file.
A. Rogerson (NLA), 24 August 2000.

2000. Surface collection.

Early Neolithic flint core and five flakes, three undatable prehistoric flakes.
Middle Saxon, Late Saxon, medieval and post-medieval sherds.
See lists in file.
