NHER 10969 (Monument record) - Recorded site of All Saints' Church, Little Moulton

Site of All Saints' Church (Ordnance Survey), Little Moulton. Demolished 1570. Around 1900 the site was known as The Sanctuary. Fragments of stone remained in farmhouse garden. Norman piscina at Great Moulton (NHER 13117).

This is one of the 'Category VI' churches listed in (S3) - which are churches abandoned between 1551-1600. It is stated that documentary sources record the church as having been in use in 1552 but destroyed at some time before 1602, with "…stones used to make a road…". The above reference to the church being demolished in 1570 appears to come from Blomefield who in (S4) records that the church "...was in use till 1570, and then was totally demolished…". At this time (i.e. around around the late 18th century) its site was apparently still called 'All Saints churchyard'.
The Ordnance Survey First Edition map (S5) marks the site of the church at this location, which coincides with a small square enclosure shown on the Moulton St Michael Tithe map (S6). As noted in (S7), this parcel of land is recorded as 'Sanctuary Field' in the accompanying Apportionment document, which is consistent with it having been the site of the church - it being recorded in (S8) that its location was "…now called the Sanctuary…".

April 2024-April 2025. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site within footprint of proposed East Pye solar farm.
This survey identified a number of former field boundary ditches, including those that defined the plot of land shown at this location on the Moulton St Michael Tithe map (S6) and recorded as 'Sanctuary Field'. There was though no clear evidence for the church itself, the only response of note at this location being an area of magnetic disturbance adjacent to the eastern edge of the field.

August-November 2025. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site within footprint of proposed East Pye solar farm.
The two trenches excavated at this location revealed no trace of the church or an associated churchyard. The only features recorded were ditches that corresponded with former boundaries shown on the Moulton St Michael Tithe map (S6).
