Summary

This old trackway which follows the parish boundary was cut by the wartime airfield and has since become abandoned. It was formerly known as Buckenham Way and Procession Way. All that now remains are two hedgerows. It has been suggested that the road is of Roman date. Several fragments of this trackway are visible as two earthwork banks with ditches either side on aerial photographs of the area.

Map

An 'old trackway' according to R. R. Clarke (NCM). This lane, following the parish boundary, was cut by the wartime airfield and has since become abandoned. Two hedgerows remain - that to north of some age - with area between overgrown.
Visited E. Rose (NAU) 26 July 1978.

This road was formerly known as Buckenham Way and Procession Way (the latter because it follows the parish boundary).
(S1) suggests it is a Roman road linking the Pye Road and the Icknield Way via Bunwell, New Buckenham, Larling and Thetford but this has not been generally accepted. Source points out that on (S2) one can make such a connection via the still existing lanes to the east and the A11 to the west, but the east connection is tortuous and to the west the lane to Illington and West Wretham is a more probable continuation.

February 2010. Norfolk NMP.
Several fragments of the trackway or road described above are visible as two earthwork banks with ditches either side on aerial photographs of the area (S3)-(S7).
The feature is visible as two banks with ditches on either side and in between (S5), stretching for nearly 1.2km from TL 9963 8915 to TM 0090 8928. The entire width of the possible ‘road’ is 28m, each ditch measures approximately 4m in width, and the banks measure up to 11m in width.
It is likely to be the same feature recorded as the NMR Linear 407 (1043893), which may have been mis-located, between 22m and 100m to the south.
E. Bales (NMP), 10 February 2010.
