Summary

A series of linear earthworks crossing New Buckenham Common, which appear to represent a former road or trackway, are visible on aerial photographs. It is possible that this may be a Roman Road, possibly part of the projected route from Caistor to Icklingham, at least one fragment of which may have been recorded to the south west in Snetterton (NHER 6035). It is also possible that it represents a medieval to post medieval road or causeway across an area which may have been waterlogged in the past.

Map

June 2012. Norfolk NMP.
A series of linear earthworks are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S13) crossing New Buckenham Common, which appear to represent a former road or trackway.
The feature is visible as two banks with ditches on either side and in between (S4), stretching for at least 600m from TM 0904 9058 to TM0964 9064. The entire width of the possible ‘road’ is approximately 14m, each ditch measures approximately 2m in width, and the banks measure up to 3m in width.
It is possible that this is the same feature recorded as the NMR Linear 407.
A further fragment of the possible road may be visible to the east and west of New Buckenham Castle (S14-S15). An earthwork bank is only faintly visible running west south west- east north east across the area, from TM 0820 9028 to TM 0861 9042. It does not appear to be related to the Castle earthworks (NHER 40577), and at one point to the west of the castle it is possible to see two possible parallel banks and a ditch feature, measuring up to 15m in total width.
