Full Description
1975. Stray Find.
Found in trial hole during construction of Thetford Bypass 'almost at base of peat' but actual depth unknown:
1 wooden object of rectangular cross section, 21cm long and broken at one end, surviving end rounded, and one side decorated with crudely incised diagonal crosses in triple line. Donated to the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1975.414). See sketch (S1).
Belongs to group of objects said to be Mesolithic axe hafts by R. Jacobi, although he has also stated that this may be the end of a bow.
P. Lambley (NCM) and A. Gregory (NAU). Information from (S2).
This discovery was reported in (S3).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 7 May 2013.
