NHER 18353 (Building record) - Knight's Hill Hotel, formerly Rising Lodge

Reference in 14th century to a lodge in Rising Chase.

As present building is marked on (S2) as Rising Lodge it is probably the same site. Present building not yet visited in detail but seems from distance to be large Georgian house in present form.

October 1984. Visit.
It is basically a Georgian house but includes one small section of older flint walling. Could be 16th/17th century. Outbuildings include large carstone barn with reused stone quoins, perhaps 16th century, while 18th century outbuildings contain large amounts of limestone, some shaped.

1986. Conversion of building to motel.
Main barn being left open as conference centre with two porches added. Smaller barn converted to pub with fittings from two unknown churches including 19th century pews.

September 1988.
Conversion works have exposed a large amount of reused ashlar blocks in the wall of the barn and the catslide extension which covers it towards the courtyard. The pub has been made from a building standing at right-angles to the barn which seems to have had a queenpost upper floor until the roof was replaced in the 19th century.

September 1988. Listed Grade II.
House, former farmhouse now hotel, around 1800 on earlier core; galletted carstone blocks with brick dressings, pantiles, hipped roof renewed and reshaped over double range of rafters. Double depth, formerly double range, three bays, two storeys; low lead covered parapet over wood eaves with modillions.
Present house is on site of a hunting lodge of the castle at Castle Rising shown on map of 1588.
