Summary

The site of a postern gate in the walls of the city's medieval defences. It was widened in the early 18th century to allow coaches to pass through, and then removed in 1792.

'Iron door', 'Gates of Swinemarket', 'Brazen Doors', 'New Gate'.
Really a postern, it was known by all these names.

(S1) (13 edition I) (1285) Grant of Land at the gates of Swinemarket.

1726. Brazeon gate to be made wide enough for coach or cart to pass through; became known as New Gate.

1792. Gate removed.
