Summary

No 31, 33, 35 Magdalen Street and Gurney Court are a number of houses, offices and shops that were originally a courtyard house. The earliest current building is the 16th century courtyard range, with a late 16th century north range, a 17th century street rang and an early 18th century south range. Interestingly, this house is also the birthplace of the prison reformer Elizabeth Fry (1780 - 1845) and Harriet Martineau (1802 - 1812).

Former courtyard houses now house, dentist and doctors surgeries and shops.
Late 16th century onwards. Brick. Rendered. Flint with brick, flint and stone dressings. Pantile and plain tile roofs.
Courtyard formed by four consecutive building phases.
Late 16th century range; courtyard facade: two storeys.
17th century street range: two storeys.
Late 16th century north range, yard facade: two storeys.
Early 18th century south range, yard facade: two storeys.
Plaques to Elizabeth Fry (1780 - 1845) and Harriet Martineau (1802 - 1812), both of whom were born here.

1996. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of four trial holes excavated was part of structural investigation of foundations.
This work recorded foundations of walls, mostly 19th century, though one may be 17th/18th century. Limestone flint and brick, mortar-bonded foundation observed in trench in courtyard. This was contemporary with earliest phase of building.
Foundations observed in three trench at rear of building were all 19th century in date.
