Summary

This site, situated close to Bishops Gate at the edge of the city walls, was the area where the early predecessors of the Protestant religion were martyred in the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. Lollards were followers of John Wycliffe, a religious reformer who was the first to issue the Bible in English. A local rumour has Sir Thomas Erpingham as a Lollard and his 'penance' was to build the Erpingham gate to the cathedral precinct.
