Summary

Metal detecting from 1993-98 recovered a number of Saxon and medieval period metal objects. The finest of these were a medieval gilded bronze buckle plate with heraldic lion decoration and a very unusual Middle Saxon strap end with an animal head at each end and inlaid silver wire.

1995. Metal detector finds.

At location [2]. Early Saxon equal-armed brooch with white metal coating and borders of stamped double 'v's. Rectangular arms. Double lug with iron and cross catchplate on reverse.

1995. Metal detector find.
Middle Saxon strap end, very unusual with animal head at each end; rectangular field between has inlaid niello and silver wire spirals partly missing to reveal rough transverse scoring to take/secure niello. Also on muzzles, eyes drilled - infill missing.

Medieval bronze signet ring. Oval bezel with the letter 'I' and plams either side, crown above; semi-circular suspension hoop. 15th century. See for comparison (S5) p.46, no 18.
