NHER 216 (Monument record) - Late Saxon to post medieval occupation, site of Berney's Inn, no 80 King Street

Evaluation of proposed development site.
The two trenches excavated revealed 10th/11th century timber buildings represented by post holes near to the King Street frontage. Early medieval and later refuse pits, and medieval quarry pits and two shallow pits of probable post emdieval date.
The two cottages of the street frontage (then No 80) which were to demolished as part of the development were also surveyed. It was determined that this relatively small building was originally a single-storey structure, with the two-storey wall on the street frontage possibily originally constructed as a hoarding. The building was then altered with the addition of first floor storey with a new staircase against the north wall. It is though to have dated to the very late 19th century or 20th century.

(S3) states there is stained glass in the Cathedral from Berney's Inn bearing the Calthorpe heraldry.
It should be noted that (S4) has 'site of Berney's Inn' marked in Ber Street, which emphasises that the antiquity markings on that map cannot be taken for granted.

August 2001. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with the redevelopment on the street frontage of 80 King Street.
The remains of at least two 10th-12th century structures were revealed, one or both of which had been clad with daub. Antler-working activities had taken place within them. An associated chalk yard surface was also recorded.
Little or no evidence of medieval occupation was apparent.
