Full Description
22 July 1996. NLA aerial photography.
Cropmarks can be seen of what appears to be most of a rectilinear enclosure.
The enclosure is bisected north to south by the current road and it is the northwest corner of the enclosure that is not demonstrated by cropmarks (but this area is in a different field, not under arable).

Cropmarks of a rectilinear enclosure of unknown, possibly Roman, date are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2). A cropmark of an incomplete rectangular enclosure is cut by the modern line of the road between Runcton Holme and Watlington. It is defined by a 2m wide ditch and measures 66m by 55m. A ditch cropmark, probably an internal subdivision, is present in its southwest corner. A second ditch is present parallel to the northern side of the enclosure. This may indicate further adjoining enclosures or a trackway along its northern side. The fact that this enclosure appears to be cut by the line of an extant road points to a medieval or earlier date being the most likely. Artefacts of Roman date have been found close to these cropmarks (NHER 29718), and it is most likely that they too are of this date. It is possible that the enclosure relates to a small settlement or farmstead. Cropmarks of second possible incomplete enclosure, on a different alignment are present to the northeast of the rectangular enclosure. The cropmarks of this possible enclosure are not completely convincing and may be of geological origin. Complex geological cropmarks are visible to the north of this group (S1).
J. Albone (NMP), 25 February 2008
