Summary

Archaeological work between 2003 and 2005 revealed medieval and post medieval features, including a series of floors, makeup layers and occupation deposits relating to a building dating from the 12th-14th century. The sequence was truncated in the 15th century and the presence of negative features (cess and rubbish dumping pits) indicated the area of that particular trench was by this period open land. Other features including medieval cobbled surfaces and internal timber floor, a probable 15th century ditch, post medieval pits, and a Victorian brick culvert were also found.

Map

February 2003-March 2005. Trial Trenching and Excavation.
Evaluation of proposed redevelopment area in 2003 (Trenches 7-14), following by archaeological monitoring and targeted excavation during site clearance and construction work in 2005 (Area B).
A series of floors, makeup layers and occupation deposits relating to a building dating from the 12th-14th century. The sequence was truncated in the 15th century and the presence of cess and rubbish pits indicated the area was by this period open land.
Another trench contained a substantial 16th century brick wall. This structure had undergone several rebuilds and a 19th-20th century building had been tacked onto its western face.
A sandstone wall enclosing a cobbled yard surface, a cobbled pathway and a later limestone wall were discovered, likely to date to the 15th-17th century.
Other features including medieval cobbled surfaces and internal timber floor, a probable 15th century ditch, post medieval pits, and a Victorian brick culvert were also found.
In addition to the above, Oxford Archaeology also exhumed and re-interred the burials from a Quaker cemetery to the north of New Conduit Street (NHER 63554) and a Baptist cemetery to the north-west of the car park to the rear of Broad Street (NHER 63555).
Oxford Archaeology also commissioned the installation of piezometers in order to carry out a two-year monitoring programme on the physical and chemical effects of the development's piled constuction on the underlying (otherwise unexposed) reclaimed marine and estuarine sediments.
See published monograph (S1) for full details. See also evaluation report (S2) and assessment report (S3). The results of this work are also summarised in (S4).
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2013.164 and NWHCM : 2013.167).
