Map

October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
The group consists of four mounds (S1) centred on TF 6332 2342, TF 6350 2338, TF 6337 2337 and TF 6339 2338. The mounds are sub-rounded in plan and vary in diameter from 40m to 105m. The eastern mound is truncated by the railway (NHER 13591) on its eastern side and by bank NHER 27106 at its northern tip. This mound may have originally been part of saltern mound NHER 19801, recorded to the immediate east on the opposite side of the railway. The central mound is also truncated along its northern side by bank 27106, which may have utilised the mound as a quarry for its material.
These features form part of a dense concentration of saltern mounds located along the saltmarsh in North and South Wootton. Direct dating evidence is scarce but isolated finds of pottery would suggest that the majority of the mounds are medieval in date.
M. Brennand (NMP) 23 October 2002.
