NHER 27886 (Monument record) - Medieval saltern mounds

There are two or possibly three mounds within this site, although the westernmost features appear to have been truncated by a channel or drain (S1). The easternmost is one of the finest saltern mounds of all those visible in the King’s Lynn area on 1940s aerial photographs. The mound (TF 6297 2157) is sub-rounded with a flattened northern end and is slightly elongated with its long axis aligned in an approximate north-west to south-east direction. The mound has a length of 96m, and width of 67m. There is an 18m length of angled ditch on the top of the northern end of the mound, with the traces of a low narrow bank on both sides. This may be the remains of a structure, or defensive emplacement or slit trench. It does not appear to be freshly excavated in 1943. The western two mounds, centred on TF 6289 2159 and TF 6290 2156 may actually have been all one mound originally. They are sub-rounded in plan, although probably truncated on the western side. The larger feature has a maximum diameter of 67m. These mounds are all likely to be medieval saltern mounds.
There is a rectangular feature visible at TF 6292 2155 (S1) formed by a narrow bank, with the fragmentary traces of a narrow ditch to its inside and outside. The feature has a length of 9m and a width of 6m, with its long axis aligned in an approximate east to west direction. This is probably the remains of a structure. It may be a medieval saltcote, but equally could date from any time in the post-medieval or modern periods.
