Summary

During a 2003 walkover survey a cluster of four posts was discovered and erosion since has revealed more posts. Two have been dated to the Bronze Age. The cluster is probably related to a second cluster to the south (NHER 38213). Together they may be part of a trackway.

J. Allen (NLA), 23 April 2003.

September 2003. Site visit.
Area of monument located using Global Positioning Satellite and memory of site. All posts have a covering of seaweed. Evidence of erosion.
D. Robertson (NAU), 21 October 2003.

February 2004.
Area of monument located using Global Positioning Satellite and memory of site. All posts have a covering of seaweed.
The southern edge of the peat bed to the northwest has eroded, with the edge moving northwards by up to 0.25m since September 2003. The peat bed has been breached by seawater and has been split in two.
The northern part of the gap between the two peat beds (the northernwest part of the monument) has seen erosion – all three measured posts in this area were more prominent than in September 2003.
The southern and eastern part of the gap between the two peat beds (the south and eastern part of the monument) has again seen deposition. Sand was observed piled up. Only one of three posts was visible.
Two samples were taken for radiocarbon dating and species identification. These returned calibrated dates of 1680-1400 cal BC and 1690-1390 cal BC (Bronze Age).
The cluster may be part of a trackway, along with NHER 38213 to the south.
