Full Description
December 1955-January 1956. Field Observation.
Upper Close, in digging footings for new offices (71a):
Late Saxon refuse pit to depth of 3m (10 feet) below modern ground surfaces, containing pottery and oyster shells.
Footing of medieval chalk wall associated with burnt layer containing fired daub (from the fire in 1272?).
15th to 16th century pottery in topsoil.
